Tel Aviv firm to supply its 'InnovizTwo' sensors for series production of ‘Level 4’ autonomous Class 8 vehicles.
Innoviz Technologies, the Nasdaq-listed developer of lidar hardware that is headquartered in Tel Aviv, Israel, is to provide short-range sensors for highly autonomous vehicles from Daimler Truck.
Having announced in September that it had won a series production deal with an unspecified “major commercial vehicle OEM”, Innoviz reports that the agreement with Daimler Truck includes a collaboration to advance the sensors for commercial trucking applications.
The deal also involves Daimler subsidiary Torc Robotics, which specializes in “virtual driver” software for self-driving vehicles.
Daimler and Torc plan to integrate Innoviz's lidar units into the autonomous Freightliner Cascadia vehicles, as one of several key components needed to enable Level 4 autonomous trucking.
That level of autonomy is defined by standards authority SAE International as “not requiring human interaction in most circumstances”, although still offering an option for manual override.
“The partnership positions Innoviz's technology as a critical component in Daimler Truck's strategy to bring autonomous trucks to market, with deployment planned across highway and regional routes in North America to help fleet operators improve operational efficiency, and enhance road safety,” stated the Israeli firm.
Stringent requirements
When it originally announced the selection in September, Innoviz said that it was scheduled to supply initial units of its “InnovizTwo” sensors by the end of this year, to support data collection activities by the customer now revealed to be Daimler Truck, and last month confirmed that those shipments had begun.
In parallel, it was due to develop software modifications to the InnovizTwo platform to address the OEM's unique vehicle integration requirements.
Rakesh Aneja, the head of corporate development at Daimler Truck North America, said: “Selecting the right lidar partner is fundamental to our autonomous trucking strategy.
“Innoviz's proven track record in automotive-grade lidar sensors makes them an ideal partner as we advance toward series production. This collaboration brings us closer to delivering autonomous trucks that will reshape the logistics industry.”
Daimler Truck has also been collaborating closely with US-based lidar firm Aeva, which specializes in the more advanced frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) version of the technology, which offers a longer range and can sense both the position and velocity of other vehicles on the road.
Innoviz CEO and co-founder Omer Keilaf, who led the firm’s venture fundraising and subsequent Nasdaq listing, said: “This partnership with Daimler Truck and Torc represents a significant validation of our technology and our position in the autonomous trucking market.
“The trucking industry demands lidar sensors that can perform reliably in the most challenging conditions while delivering the precision and range needed for safe autonomous operation.
“Our InnovizTwo sensors have demonstrated compliance with these stringent requirements, and we're excited to support Daimler Truck and Torc in bringing this transformative technology to market.”
In its most recent financial quarter Innoviz posted sales revenues of $15.3 million, up sharply from only $4.5 million in the same period last year - although that still resulted in an operating loss of $15.8 million in the three months ending September 30.
