JDS Uniphase has reported first-quarter net earnings that came in 2 cents above analysts' expectations, after many fears about a slow-down in the fibre-optics market.
The news comes just after Nortel Networks announced its third-quarter sales had declined from the second quarter and after Lucent Technologies said its fourth-quarter fiber-optic sales also declined. Both companies are JDS Uniphase customers.
JDS Uniphase reported sales for its fist quarter ending September 30, 2000, of USD786 million and a pro forma net income of USD177 million, or USD0.18 per diluted share. Sales for the quarter were 23% above pro forma combines sales of USD641million for the previous quarter and 171% up on combined sales for the same quarter laser year.
