The European Optical Society has appointed its first executive director, Klaus-Dieter Nowitzki. The appointment is the society's first step towards turning itself into a professional organization.
"Our non-professional status has been a handicap for us in the past, when dealing with organizations such as the SPIE and OSA in the US," commented Nowitzki. "Professionalization of the European Optical Society will give the European optics community stronger political representation."
Nowitzki will continue in his role as director of the German laser institute, Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft Lasertechnik, and he will divide his time between the two organizations. "We want to show people that it's worth being a member of the European Optical Society. My first aim is to form topical groups within the organization and run workshops," he said.
