Herwig Kogelnik receives IEEE Medal of Honor

Bell Labs' Photonics Systems Research vice-president receives IEEE's highest award

Herwig Kogelnik, adjunct Photonics Systems Research vice-president at Lucent Technologies' Bell Labs, will receive the 2001 IEEE Medal of Honor at an awards ceremony on June 23. The IEEE's highest award recognizes Kogelnik "for fundamental contributions to the science and technology of lasers and optoelectronics and for leadership in the research and development of photonics and lightwave communication systems".

Arun Netravali, president of Bell Labs, will receive the IEEE's Jack S Kilby Signal Processing Medal at a ceremony on 23 June. Netravali, who also serves as Lucent's chief technology officer and network architect, shares this year's prize with Thomas S Huang, a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, US. Sponsored by Texas Instruments, the award honors Huang and Netravali " for pioneering and sustained contributions to image-sequence processing and its applications to digital television, pattern recognition and computer animation".
