Southampton Photonics, the spin-off company of the University of Southampton's Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), has raised USD 56 million in its latest funding round. Armed with the cash injection, the company plans to expand its workforce to 200 over the next 18 months. Most staff will be located at Southampton University's science park and there are plans to set up design, production and sales facilities in California.
The start-up company will focus on distributed feedback fibre laser arrays, optical filters and broadband amplifiers. Founder and ORC director David Payne pioneered the development of erbium-doped fibre amplifiers, or EDFAs, which are widely used in long-haul optical networks.
