US laser manufacturer Coherent has unveiled its new solid-state 488 nm laser for biological applications. The optically-pumped semiconductor source is a more compact and convenient alternative to bulkier argon-ion lasers, the company says.
Blue-green laser emission is widely used in biomedical instrumentation because it excites fluorescence from many molecules. Examples include cell monitoring in AIDS patients, DNA sequencing and drug development.
Although the device is not yet commercially available, preliminary specifications include an output power of 20 mW at 488 nm, a TEM00 beam and less than 1% noise. Beta testing is imminent, and the first deliveries are expected early next year.
Coherent has also filed to sell 3 million common shares, worth approximately USD 180 million, in an effort to raise capital for future acquisitions and investments.
