Corning has bought Honeywell's Optical Polymer Group in order to expand its activities in the area of optical polymers. The acquisition includes the intellectual property, equipment and scientific staff of the company.
The optical polymer group was part of Allied Signal, which merged with Honeywell earlier this year. While part of Allied Signal, the group developed the lowest loss materials for polymer-based components.
Paul Rogoski of Corning emphasized that this is primarily a technical acquisition. "It is not a very large group or a significant investment for Corning," he said. The group has been primarily involved in research and has not yet had any significant sales, although prototype products have been developed. The purchase will allow Corning to expand its traditionally glass-based product line in optical polymers.
The group is likely to become part of Corning's optical networking and devices group.
