JDS Uniphase goes company shopping again

17 Jun 2002

In its latest investment spree, JDS Uniphase Corporation has bought Oprel Technologies Inc, a Canadian developer of optical amplifiers, test equipment and optoelectronic packaging. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Oprel Technologies was founded in 1993 in Nepean, Ontario and has 25 employees. Its product line includes erbium doped fibre amplifiers for fibre-optic networks and a full-line of test equipment for optoelectronic devices. Oprel has also developed packaging for devices including DFB laser diodes, high-temperature and high-power laser diodes, and semiconductor optical amplifiers.

  • JDS Uniphase has also announced that it will invest USD 125million to add an additional 600,000 square feet and related capital equipment to its global operations. JDS Uniphase says that the investment is part of its continuing strategic plan to meet customer demand for both components and modules. The largest single expansion will take place in Ottawa, Canada, where JDS Uniphase will build approximately 360,000 square feet of additional R&D, manufacturing and office facilities.
