The Spanish mint, Fabrica Nacional de Moneda Y Timbres, is producing 500 peseta and 2000 peseta coins with a latent image as an anti-counterfeit measure. The optically variable device is embedded on the surface of the coin and is comparable to the latent image which can be produced using intaglio printing. The patented process consists of parallel grooves with an isosceles triangle section with each slope of the groove engraved with a component of a different image, allowing a different design or image to be seen from opposite viewing angles.
