Sanyo Electric (Tokyo, Japan) has developed a laser that makes it possible to design digital-videodisk (DVD) players for automobiles. The laser operates at a highertemperature, 80degreeC, than lasers currently being used for first-generation DVD players, which operate at 70degreeC. The increased tolerance to temperature isimportant for car use because of the reduced ventilation available. The company envisions using the DVD player, with its large data capacity, in the next generation ofcar-navigation systems. Commercial production of the new laser will begin in April.
