Start-up spotlight: Lumanova

06 Nov 2007

A German start-up supplies DPSS lasers and consultancy support to emerging markets.

What is Lumanova's core technology?
"Our expertise lies in Q-switched as well as continuous-wave diode-pumped solid-state lasers in the ultraviolet, the visible and the near-infrared spectral range," Ingo Freitag, the company's co-founder, told optics.org. "The company can also act as a consultancy, particularly in supporting commercial OEM customers in emerging markets."

What products does Lumanova sell?
The company produces Q-switched and continuous-wave diode-pumped solid-state lasers in the ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared ranges. The product range includes:
• Flare UV, a Q-switched UV laser for N2 gas laser replacement, emits up to 0.2 mJ at 355 nm. "The sealed laser head has a footprint of 135 x 61 mm and is available with either a free space beam or coupled into a fiber," said Freitag. "Other standard wavelengths are 532 nm up to 400 µJ, and 1064 nm up to 1000 µJ."
• The µFlare series, designed to deliver high repetition rates at 355, 473, 532 and 1064 nm. "Packaged in a sealed standard 14-pin butterfly package, it is based on the same passive Q-switching technology as the Flare series but uses a single emitter pump diode instead of a diode array," Feitag explained. "Repetition rates up to 100 kHz, depending on wavelength and model, are possible."

What application areas does Lumanova target?
Bioscience applications, such as microdissection, laser induced fluorescence, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI). Materials processing, including marking, micro machining, laser trimming. Metrology techniques like Raman spectroscopy, laser inspection, holography.

What were the origins of the company?
Lumanova was founded in 2004 by Stefan Spiekermann and Ingo Freitag, both experienced in diode-pumped solid-state lasers. Freitag previously founded InnoLight in 1997, developing ultrastable single-frequency lasers for the scientific market. Lumanova was founded to address OEM and industrial customers.
