Polaroid Corporation has announced a strategic alliance with Colorado MicroDisplay to develop and market a new generation of mobile, wireless digital imaging and printing devices that are based on area-array technology. Research will focus on improving image sizes and developing higher-resolution displays.
Gary DiCamillo Polaroid's chairman said: "This alliance represents a key step in executing the Polaroid digital strategy. It combines the resources of both companies to realize the tremendous potential of advanced area-array technology for new digital imaging platforms that allow picture taking and printing anytime, anywhere."
Using CMD's microdisplay technology, Polaroid plans to create mobile, wireless, low-cost products that generate multiple copies of digital images instantly without a computer or a Web site. CMD's area-array technology creates microdisplays that generate faster, improved images and use significantly less energy than traditional systems.
The alliance also covers secondary applications including miniature, embedded LCD viewfinders for digital cameras to solve two of the problems that plague most digital cameras: electronic LCDs drain batteries after a few minutes and are almost impossible to see in bright sunlight.
"CMD's microdisplays produce larger, brighter and higher-resolution images than standard LCDs found on today's digital cameras," said Kenney Roberts, CMD's chief operating officer. "They deliver a 14-inch image versus a 1.8-inch image, have three times the resolution, and eliminate the pixelation that is normally associated with camera monitors. Microdisplay-based viewfinders are not impacted by sunlight and, because they require less power, they extend the life of the camera's batteries."
