The Laser Institute of America (LIA) has released a revised document that details laser-safety standards for industrial, military, medical and educational applications.
Providing information on laser classifications, hazard analysis and control measures needed to develop a comprehensive laser program, the ANSI Z136.1 (2000) document also updates the 1993 version by incorporating biological effects. These include hazard evaluation for ocular exposure of small (intrabeam) and extended source viewing; new tables detailing maximum permissible exposures; and changes to the design of warning signs.
The new document also deals with the safety issues associated with laser pointers.
Priced USD 90, the new standard can be ordered by contacting the LIA.
