Traffic police apply machine vision

17 Jun 2002

A machine vision system that measures the average speed of vehicles in order to catch law-breakers will soon be in place on British roads.

Two digital cameras are mounted along a road a few miles apart. These cameras, which are fully automatic and do not require any film, record a car's licence plate and the travel time along the stretch of road. This gives the average speed rather than the spot speed usually recorded. The cameras have powerful infrared illumination so that the devices can "see" at night and in bad weather.

If a vehicle is caught speeding, the second camera records an image of the front of car and warns the driver to slow down.

The UK's Home Office has just approved the system following trials, on two motorways, that reduced the number of speeding vehicles by 30%. Speed Check Services Ltd, the system developer, is now negotiating with local authorities, the police and the highway agency, according to the September edition of Opto and Laser Europe.
