Boeing has received a contract to install electronic support measures on four E-3 Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft for the French Air Force. Air France Industries, under subcontract to Boeing, will install the ESM, a passive surveillance system which enables the AWACS to detect, identify, and track electronic transmissions from ground, airborne, and maritime sources and allows mission operators to determine radar and weapons system type. The first aircraft will be modified beginning in January 1999 with completion of the final aircraft expected in December 2000.
