International Remote Imaging Systems, Inc., has delivered an advanced computer-controlled microscope system to the NASA Johnson Space Center which will be used to measure the effects of radiation on astronauts and cosmonauts. The "Automatic Rare Event Finder" examines 30 microscope slides at a time, automatically focuses chromosones and feeds their images into a computer, which analyzes the percentage of the cells with broken chromosones. The instrument will support a JSC research program to establish limits on lifetime career spaceflight duration.
