Orbital's tracking system successful in Virginia snowstorm

The Virginia Department of Transportation successfully deployed Orbital Sciences Corporation's OrbTrac-100 Automatic Vehicle Location and Fleet Management system during the snowstorm which hit northern Virginia last week. The system enabled the Virginia DOT to tell which roadways had been plowed, salted, or sanded and to track snowplow and other road maintenance vehicles on a digital map which represents a designated service area. The system of 80 in-vehicle tracking units and three computer-aided dispatch stations is currently the largest implementation of a GPS-based fleet management for winter maintenance.
