SY Technologies spins off subsidiary, teams with Coherent Optics

Diffractive-optics manufacturer SY Technologies Inc. (Huntsville, AL) has formed a wholly owned subsidiary, MEMS Optical Inc. (Huntsville, AL), to target commercial business in the diffractive-optics market. SY Technologies will continue to focus on defense business.

MEMS Optical has licensed diffractive-optics technology from Allegheny Teledyne subsidiary Teledyne Brown Engineering (Huntsville, AL). The company also has formed a strategic alliance with Coherent Auburn Group, Optics Division (Auburn, CA), to target the diffractive-optics market. The two will work together, trading on their relative strengths: Coherent will continue with reactive ion etching and diamond-turning volume manufacturing, while MEMS will concentrate on replication and addressing small prototype orders.
