LASER 2005: Tiny blue DPSS laser

16 Jun 2005

French start-up Oxxius launches what it says is the world's smallest blue laser module.

Oxxius, a 2 year old French start-up, has unveiled what it says is the world’s smallest blue laser module. Measuring only 50 x 44 x 25 mm, the diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) laser offers output powers up to 50 mW at a wavelength of 473 nm.

The product is called the SLIM-473. According to Thierry Georges, Oxxius’ founder and CEO, the laser is an ideal replacement for argon-ion lasers used in biomedical applications such as cytometry and microscopy.

“We believe we have solved some of the problems with DPSS lasers,” Georges told Optics.org. “Our laser is single frequency, it has low noise and a very narrow linewidth. We also believe our technology is scalable up to powers of around 1 W.”

The SLIM-473 uses Oxxius’ patented alignment-free monolithic resonator (AMR) technology. Based on a monolithic crystal architecture, this set-up allows a range of wavelengths to be generated via frequency doubling. Georges says that Oxxius is investigating sources emitting at 457 nm, particularly for the laser-based display industry.

Oxxius is based in Lannion, France and was founded in December 2002. It received funding of EURO 2.4 million in July 2004 from Sofinnova Partners and is hoping to close a second round in 2006.

The SLIM-473 is on show at Oxxius’ booth: B1.679.
