• Trumpf, the German maker of industrial lasers, has formed a new subsidiary to develop high-power laser diodes. Trumpf Photonics, based in New Jersey, US, will have an initial workforce of 20 and is formed through the acquisition of the major assets of Princeton Lightwave, a US start-up developing semiconductor lasers.
• Israel-based Lumenis, a maker of medical lasers, has received clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration to market its OpusDent erbium lasers. The lasers can be used for a wide range of dental applications such as soft tissue, peridontal and root canal surgery.
• UK-based Qinetiq has won a EURO 1.25 million contract to study airflow in cities. Awarded by the UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the company will use lidar to improve current pollution models and understand how the atmosphere disperses pollutants.
• Hommelwerke of Germany, a subsidiary of Jenoptik Laser, has acquired fellow German firm Optische Sensorsysteme (OPTI-SENS). The purchase strengths the Jenoptik group's optical measurement technology unit, which gains OPTI-SENS's knowledge of industrial image processing for surface inspection.
• Photonic Products, a UK-based supplier of industrial laser diodes, has opened a new office in California, US. Tony Pope, the company's managing director said: "We are very excited at the opportunities the new office will open up, both for increased business and to get closer to our existing customers."
