CRTs continue to be the leading display technology worldwide as sales reached 120 million units in the first half of this year. This is a 5% increase from the 114 million sold during the same period last year.
The growth in sales could be attributed to the rise in worldwide demand for TV sets and personal computers, driven by an expanding replacement market and an increasing penetration in emerging markets, industry figures report.
At the same time, the recent World Cup in Korea and Japan bolstered demand for TVs in Asia. There was also a 50% growth in demand for flat CRTs year on year. An estimated 90% of the displays used in TV and desktop computers are still CRT-based.
