  • Schott Optovance, a US-based optical interconnent company, has joined forces with VCSEL array manufacturer ULM Photonics of Germany. Schott Optovance will become the exclusive distributor of ULM Photonics' products in North America.

  • Taiwan-based Arima Optoelectronics has ramped up production of its nitride-based ultrahigh-brightness light-emitting diodes. The Arima Group subsidiary has bought two planetary reactors from metallorganic chemical vapor deposition systems maker Aixtron, Germany.

  • UK-based displays technology developers CRL Opto and MicroPix are to unite under common management. The integrated company will be known as CRL Opto Limited and operations will continue from both sites.

  • Fiber-optic giant Corning has acquired Siemens' 51% stake in an Indonesian manufacturer of optical fiber to access the growing telecoms industy in Asia. Previously called PT Siemens Kabel Optik, the company will now trade under the name PT Communication Cable Systems Indonesia.

  • US optical components maker Sabeus Photonics has bagged USD 16 million in venture capital funding. With funds now exceeding USD 24 million, the company plans to develop optical network components and expand its manufacturing facilities.

  • Imaging developers 3D Systems and laser manufacturer Spectra-Physics, both of the US, have joined forces to develop and manufacture diode-pumped solid-state lasers for imaging applications. "Our solid imaging systems are expanding into rapid tooling and manufacturing applications," said 3D Systems' vice-president of development and operations, Martin McGough. "We expect [to introduce] a highly advanced family of laser systems."

  • The US National Science Foundation has awarded a USD 10.8 million grant to Columbia University, US, to develop materials for photonics applications. The award is part of a USD 520 million National Nanotechnology Initiative for applications-led nanotechnology centers.
