German optics group buys bankrupt solid-state laser firm.
Germany-based optics giant Jenoptik has set up a new company called Jenoptik Solid Laser. Created from Idar Laser, a bankrupt manufacturer of lasers for medical devices, Jenoptik Solid Laser will manufacture Nd:YAG laser sources for marking.
Joachim Schindler, a spokesman at Jenoptik Laser Optik Systeme said: "Idar Laser had economic problems and needed an investor. We were interested in their laser sources with power ranges between 10 W and 60 W and high beam quality, as these fit best for marking applications."
Based in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, the new company will be a subsidiary of Jenoptik Laser Optik Systeme, the optics and laser arm of Jenoptik. The company will be led by Hermann Voelckel, already managing director of sister company Jenoptik Laserdiode, and will start production in January of next year. It will employ 10 people, some of which originally came from IDAR Laser.
