LASER 2001 update: Trumpf buys stake in Jenoptik subsidiary
German laser manufacturers Trumpf and Jenoptik have formed a partnership in the high-performance diode laser sector that involves Trumpf acquiring 25.1 percent of Jenoptik’s Laserdiode subsidiary for an undisclosed price. The remaining 74.9 percent will remain with Jenoptik.
By joining forces, the companies hope to accelerate the development of high-performance diode laser technology for industrial applications.
“The interplay between diode manufacture and industrial application will quickly lead to innovative approaches and new spheres of application,” said Prof. Dr. H C Lothar Spaeth, Jenoptik’s chairman.
The companies say that high performance diode lasers are likely to perform a leading role in materials processing applications as the technology advances. For Jenoptik, the partnership offers a guarantee of sales in certain sectors. Trumpf gains access to Laserdiode’s expertise in high-efficiency, diode excitation sources for solid-state lasers.
The agreement, which is backdated to January 1, 2001, will enable Jenoptik to invest approximately EUR 11 million in a new clean-room building at its Jena site, which will accommodate the mass production of high-performance diode lasers. Growth in research and development activities and sales figures are anticipated. Laserdiode’s management activities will remain with the Jenoptik board, say the companies.
