US-based Gemfire has raised more than USD 63 million from industry leaders.
Gemfire's latest investors are US companies Cisco Systems, Corning, Finisar, Intel Capital and TriQuint Semiconductor. A string of venture capitalists have also contributed.
"We focus on component-level issues and are pleased that investors recognize that this is key to implementing new optical-networking technologies," said Gemfire's president and chief executive, Richard Tompane.
With investments now totalling USD 85 million, Gemfire plans to manufacture integrated array-based components for fiber-optic applications that remove barriers to optical-network expansion.
"What impresses us about Gemfire is its ability to match materials, such as lithium niobate and optical polymers, to maximize product functionality at a reasonable cost," said Rob Hannemann of Corning. "Such innovation at the component level will allow system developers to create more effective network architectures."
