In its latest shopping spree, JDS Uniphase has signed an agreement to buy Cronos Integrated Microsystems of Research Triangle Park, NC, for USD 750 million in stock.
Cronos, a manufacturer of optical MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems), spun out of MCNC (formerly the Microelectronics Center of North Carolina) a year ago and has more than 50 patents granted or pending for MEMS technology.
Cronos will remain as a wholly owned subsidiary of JDS Uniphase and its president and CEO, Robert Bratter, will remain as COO. The company employs about 70 people.
JDS Uniphase and other telecom companies are very interested in MEMS technology because it avoids the need for converting between optical and electrical signals. MEMS devices enable the creation of very small, high capacity switches. Last month Nortel Networks also bought two MEMS-related companies, CoreTek and Xros (see Nortel buys VCSEL and MEMS technology and Nortel acquires optical-switching start-up.
