Flexible dimming improves display efficiency

17 Jun 2002

Microsemi Corp, of Santa Ana, California has developed integrated circuits, known as RangeMAX, that reduce the number of components required for backlighting and can increase the power efficiency of liquid crystal displays.

"The technology that we have allows us to dim the cold cathode fluorescence lamps, from 0 to 500," said Manual Lynch, of Microsemi. "We're the only company that has below 70 percent dimming capacity."

RangeMAX has a strike architecture, which allows a bypass of the heated coil. "What we do is overdrive the lamp," Lynch explained. "It comes on instantaneously." When full power is reached the bypass is turned off to allow for the most efficient level of power.

"Our device takes the efficiency from about 60 percent efficiency to about 93 percent," Lynch said. "That type of savings is significant to play time for the battery."

This technology was developed by Microsemi's Linfinity division. Microsemi acquired Linfinity, formerly headquartered in Garden Grove, CA, in April 1999 to develop power management products. The company has patented this technology (US 5923129).
