Corning will buy Optovac, a Massachusetts-based manufacturer of calcium fluoride optics for semiconductors and optical lithography.
Calcium fluoride optics enable the production of the deep ultraviolet light needed for faster and more powerful integrated circuits. Optovac's optics form part of lens assemblies in microlithographic stepper machines, which print the circuitry on high-speed computer chips. Its products are currently employed in laser systems, and for imaging and analytical applications, like space telescopes and medical testing.
Optovac will be bought from EM Industries, its parent company. EM Industries is an associate of E Merck KGaA of Darmstadt, Germany, an international group of companies that make speciality chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Corning's second acquisition in as many days aims to expand its materials business as a supplier of optical materials for integrated circuits and to strengthen its position in the optical-lithography marketplace.
