Rofin-Sinar reorganizes to embrace new technology

17 Jun 2002

Following the introduction of high-power diode-pumped solid-state lasers, developed in conjunction with the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology (see Diode pumping gives high-power solid-state laser), Rofin-Sinar has created two separate business units within the cutting and welding division. The two units will concentrate on YAG and CO2 lasers respectively and enable the research and the production for each type of laser to work more closely together. This should make the design and production phases more efficient.

The restructuring affects the site in Hamburg, Germany, which has more than half of Rofin-Sinar's employees. The research and production activities will remain in the same site and the reorganization is not expected to create or remove employment.

Although the company does not yet have any of its diode-pumped solid-state lasers, with powers between 550 watts and 4.4 kilowatts, in production line, it has already made some for customers in some research institutions.
