Ocean Optics, a Florida-based manufacturer of miniature fibre-optic spectrometers, has bought Continental Optical Corporation of Hauppage, NY, which makes precision optical components and coatings for military and commercial markets.
Continental Optical will retain its name and operate as a 'precision optics' division within Ocean Optics. Mark Grindel, Continental Optical's president, will be general manager of the new division. Rob Morris, of Ocean Optical, says that the initial plan is to maintain Continental's operations in NY for about six months and then relocate to join the rest of Ocean.
Ocean Optics has also created a new division, Ocean Thin Films, which promises to recruit as many as 40 new employees over the next year. This division will produce high-volume patterned dichroic optical filters, to transmit light selectively according to its wavelength. These filters can be integrated into applications such as digital projection for the entertainment industry, CCD camera and multispectral imaging, military targeting, and dense wavelength division multiplexing for telecommunications.
The addition of the new divisions will bring the total employees to about 100 but the company has further expansion plans. Morris says that Ocean plans to restructure the company into four divisions -precision optics, thin films, sensors and spectrometers.
