JDS Uniphase will buy Epitaxx

JDS Uniphase Corporation will acquire Epitaxx of New Jersey, US for JDS Uniphase shares worth USD 400 million.

Epitaxx is a supplier of optical detectors and receivers for fibre-optic telecommunications and cable television networks, and JDS Uniphase sees the purchase as an opportunity to expand its range of 'active' optoelectronic products.

A majority of Epitaxx's shares are held by a subsidiary of Nippon Sheet Glass Co, a key supplier of microlenses to JDS Uniphase. The acquisition also strengthens collaborations between Nippon and JDS Uniphase.

The purchase is expected to take place in November 1999, subject to certain closing conditions.
