SPIE and OSA will not merge

17 Jun 2002

Despite the backing of the two boards of directors, the Optical Society of America (OSA) will not merge with the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE). Of the 4971 votes cast by OSA members, 2420 (just under 49%) were in favour of the proposed merger while 2551 were opposed to it. A two thirds majority was needed before a merger could proceed.

Approximately 53% of OSA's voting members participated in the vote. The results were announced yesterday at the OSA's annual business meeting in California.

The result from the ballot of SPIE members will be announced next week but will not affect the OSA's 'no merge' position.
