Satellite imagery companies forge closer links

17 Jun 2002

Two satellite imagery companies have announced mutual distributor agreements and plans for joint venture projects.

Spot Image of Toulouse, France will be the exclusive European distributor of high-resolution panchromatic and multispectral imagery from the OrbView-3 and OrbView-4 satellites planned by the US company Orbimage, an affiliate of Orbital Sciences Corporation, in the US. The French company will also become a non-exclusive distributor of data from Orbimage's OrbView satellites whilst Orbimage will have non-exclusive distributor rights to imagery from the Spot satellites in the US.

The initial five year agreement, valued at USD 35 million or more, includes an upgrade of Spot Image's ground station so that imagery from Orbimage's satellites can be downloaded and processed directly in Europe.

Imagery from the Orbimage and Spot constellation of satellites supports applications in the remote sensing market, including mapping, business GIS, agriculture, oil and gas, utilities, fishing and national security. The companies believe that their combined resources and experience will meet the needs of customers requiring both broad coverage at lower resolution, and specific areas at higher resolution.
