DARPA selects Call/Recall for Gb/s optical storage system

17 Jun 2002

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has selected Call/Recall, Inc. (San Diego, California) to develop a high-speed and high-capacity removable storage system for optical media such as next-generation Digital Versatile Disk systems and optical disks for computers. The DAPRA program, called Fast Read-out Optical Storage Technology (FROST), seeks to develop an optical storage system using a three-dimensional, highly parallel readout approach permitting readout speeds measured in gigabits per second. The initial prototype is planned to have a 50 GB capacity with a 2 GB/s transfer rate with subsequent versions planned to provide 100 GB systems with over 10 Gb/s throughput.
