Raytheon Systems Company has been awarded a commercial contract from ITOCHU Aviation, Inc., for four Phalanx Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS) and associated spares for resale to the Japan Defense Agency. The systems will be installed on two of the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force's Murasame class destroyers and are expected to be delivered in November 2000. The Phalanx CIWS is a rapid-fire computer-controlled radar and gun system which automatically acquires, tracks, and destroys enemy threats which have penetrated all other ship defense systems. The contract is worth $49 million to Raytheon.
