Philips sells optoelectronics unit

Royal Philips Electronics has sold its Philips Optoelectronics B.V. subsidiary to Uniphase Corporation. Uniphase will issue stock to Philips for the acquisition of the 300-person company which produces and markets semiconductor lasers, photodiodes, and amplifiers. Philips Optoelectronics will continue to be based in Eindhoven and Philips will lease the location to Uniphase, which supplies components and modules to the telecommunications and cable television industries.
