Corning Incorporated broke ground Nov. 10 for its new High Purity Fused Silica (HPFS) plant located outside Charleston, South Carolina. The $75 million facilitywill be dedicated to the manufacture of HPFS, an ultra-pure advanced glass for high-performance optical applications including lens assemblies used in themanufacture of computer chips. The 150,000 square foot facility will allow Corning to increase its capacity for HPFS, whose demand has grown with increasedproduction of microlithographic steppers used by the semiconductor industry to print circuitry optically on computer chips.
