CairnsIRIS usually relies of local municipalities and fire districts to purchase its Thermal Imaging helmet, but firefighters in Santee, CA, may get one ofthe $25,000 devices through community donations. Community efforts, including fundraising by the Santee School District PTA groups, will donatefunds for the device which allows firefighters to see through smoke. The Santee City Council approved authorizing the city to accept cash donations, along with its own expenditure of up to $1,000 for maintenance. Santee acting city manager George Tockstein said that if the initial Thermal Imaginghelmet proves beneficial he will request the purchase of additional helmets in future budget proposals.
