Panel recommends astigmatism approval

An FDA panel has recommended approval of a new surgical procedure that uses an excimer laser to treat astigmatism. The panel studied hundreds of cases performed nationwide using excimer-laser systems from VISX (Santa Clara, CA) and concluded that the laser was both effective and safe enough for approval. The FDA will take the panel's recommendation under advisement and is expected to grant full clearance to the procedure in the near future.
