More than 10,000 scientists, engineers, and technicians met at the San Jose Convention Center this week for the largest meeting ever held in the optics industry. Photonics West steeped the Bay Area in an array of products, conferences, and courses related to lasers, optoelectronics, electronic imaging, and biomedical optics science and applications. Exhibit attendance alone exceeded 3000 walk-ins.
Programs on optoelectronics and electronic imaging were particularly strong at SPIE's February meeting, according to meeting planners. Strong imaging conferences included projection and stereoscopic displays; multimedia hardware architectures; and visual communications and image processing. Hot laser and optoelectronic topics included free-space laser communications and vertical-cavity and surface emitting lasers. Biomedical conferences on optical tomography and spectroscopy -- chaired by Britton Chance, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine -- fluorescence sensing technology -- chaired by Joseph Lackowicz, University of Maryland School of Medicine -- drew standing room only crowds.
Photonics West will return to the San Jose Convention Center 24-30 January 1998. To request a complete announcement and call for papers, send e-mail to pw98@spie.org
