The worldwide semiconductor market declined 7% in 1996 as a result of the steep drop in the DRAM market, with revenue reaching $141 billion, according to Dataquest (San Jose, CA).
"DRAM revenue growth had been the major factor in the semiconductor revenue upswing from 1993 through 1995; DRAM continued as the revenue driver in 1996 as DRAM revenue declined by nearly 40% in 1996," says Gene Norrett, vice president and director of Dataquest's Semiconductors Worldwide program.
"Excluding DRAM, the 1996 semiconductor market actually grew by 6%, led by a 14% microcomponent revenue growth," said Norrett. American suppliers take over the lead from Japan as top regional suppliers.
