NASA has awarded diffractive-optics manufacturer Geltech (Orlando, FL) a $100,000 Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant to develop fabrication methods for radiation-hard optics. In collaboration with researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Oak Ridge, TN), Geltech engineers will use optical-replication techniques and commercially available radiation-resistant glass to produce anamorphic optics that combine beam-shaping and focusing capabilities in a single element. The goal of the 12-month STTR contract is to demonstrate feasibility; applications for the optics include optical communications, metrology, and spaceflight/weapons systems.
