A postage-stamp-size prototype cube displaying three-dimensional images has been demonstrated by 3D Technology Laboratories (Mountain View, CA). Holographic or liquid-crystal displays typically have restricted viewing angles in which an image appears sharp. The cube is fashioned from fluoride-glass layers doped with rare-earth metals that emit red, blue, or green light when excited to discrete energy levels. Two intersecting laser beams, typically 1.5 mm and 850 nm, determine the emission location and color within the cube.
