While Russia is making progress in its efforts to develop microelectronics in its efforts to develop microelectronics production well enough to participate in the international marketplace, it must improve the infrastructure needed to support world-class semiconductor manufacturing if it is to succeed. This was the opinion expressed by many of the more than 80 semiconductor industry executives to their Russian counterparts recently.
"The good news is that there is now greater acceptance than we have seen in previous visits of the weaknesses in the infrastructure, and also a committed effort to make the required improvements, no matter how long it takes," said Paul Davis, vice president of international operations of Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), the global trade association that organized the executive mission.
The meetings took place in Zelenograd, Russia's "Silicon Valley," about 30 miles outside Moscow. The majority of executives visiting from the United States, Europe, and Asia were from companies supplying the equipment and materials necessary to build the Russian infrastructure. Currently, 66 percent of Russia's chips are exported to China, Hong Kong, and other Asian countries.
