The National Science Foundation (NSF) has formally established a Materials Research Science and Engineering Center at the University of Houston for Advanced Oxides and Related Materials. Initial director will be noted high-temperature superconductivity researcher C. W. (Paul) Chu. Funding of $4.14M will be provided to the University of Houston over a five-year period.MRSEC-UH is considered to be a spinoff of the Texas Center for Superconductivity at the University of Houston (TCSUH); all but one faculty member of the new MRSEC-UH team are current researchers in TCSUH's superconductivity and related materials program. The research team will conduct basic and applied research on the synthesis, characterization, and properties of oxide materials that have technologically important applications in ionic devices including membrane and electrocatalytic reactors, solid oxide fuel cells, and chemical sensors.
