GELTECH to study non-axially symmetric optics

17 Jun 2002

GELTECH, Inc. (Orlando, FL) has been awarded a $100,000 Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer Program (STTR) Grant from NASA. The twelve month STTR contract will demonstrate the feasibility of fabricating inexpensive anamorphic optical elements that combine beam shaping and focusing functions in one element suitable for space applications. Using a novel method to produce molds for replication by pressing radiation-resistant glass, the joint project of GELTECH, Inc. and Oak Ridge National Laboratory promises new optical elements appropriate for use in ionizing radiation environments.

Potential uses include optical communications, optical instrumentation, optical metrology, and beam correctors for conformal windows in flight and weapons systems. Commercial applications that will benefit from this study are consumer optical products such as optical disks and laser printers, according to GELTECH, Inc., a leading manufacturer in the field of glass micro-optics and advanced ceramics products.
