From the skybox at the San Jose Convention Center, you could see a triumph in the making for a community that scarcely three years ago was in an economic slump. More than 8,700 scientists and engineering professionals packed the convention center at Photonics West this week. Attendance was up 15% from the previous years' record high, underscoring the health and renewed growth of laser, optics, and imaging industries.
Photonics West introduced more than 30 new products to 3,000 exhibit-only attendees over the course of a three-day exhibition that featured over 350 leading companies worldwide. More than just a trade show, however, Photonics West presented 2,500 scientific papers throughout the week, hinting of products years away from the showroom floor. Nearly half of all papers presented on lasers applications, optoelectronics, electronic imaging, and biomedical optics applications came from outside the U.S., illustrating the level of international interest in developing these advanced technologies. Technical attendance was up markedly, with higher ratios of listeners to presenters than in previous years.
North America's largest meeting for the developers and users of laser, optics, and electro-optics technologies returns to the San Jose Convention Center 8-14 February 1997.
Don't miss Photonics East--18-22 November 1996 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts!
