Lumenova, Jenoptik to collaborate on next-generation LED lighting systems.
Lumenova (Esslingen, Germany) and Jenoptik Polymer Systems (Triptis, Germany) have inked a long-term strategic alliance in the area of LED lighting.
The partners aim "to achieve a quick entry into the strong-growth market of LED lighting in public spaces and in their commercial use, as well as the development of new areas of application such as tunnel lighting or lighting for production halls".
The wide-ranging agreement covers next-generation LED lighting systems based on Lumenova's "Lightengine" technology. The remit also includes the development of advanced reflector optics for a range of applications.
Lumenova, which is part of the PSI Group, supplies Lightengine LED subsystems to manufacturers of street lighting, as well as to its affiliated company 2K Moxa Lighting.
According to the vendor, an LED street light "offers savings in electricity in the double-figure percentage range, is virtually maintenance-free and consequently provides for a marked reduction in operating costs".
The PSI Group has its roots in a management buy-out from the former Panasonic fluorescent-tube plant in Esslingen am Neckar, Germany.
• According to Strategies Unlimited, a US market-research firm, the LED lighting market is forecast to be worth more than $5bn in 2012. That equates to a CAGR of 28% from 2008–12 as the industry moves beyond single-colour and colour-changing applications into general illumination applications such as residential, commercial and off-grid.
