Report reveals high-power LED innovation

29 Sep 2006

A new series of LED Quarterly Insights reports, produced by the publishers of optics.org, kicks off with an in-depth analysis of the latest advances in high-power LEDs.

The pace of development at the high-power end of the LED market continues to reach new heights. Leading manufacturers of high-power light emitters have introduced updated versions of their devices that set new records for lumen output, efficiency and operating power, while researchers continue to investigate novel materials and chip technologies that promise to push the performance envelope of future generations of high-power LEDs still further.

"One key driver for all this innovation is the growing realization that LED manufacturers must extend their reach beyond the mobile handset market to ensure sustainable growth in the coming years," says the report, the first in the current LED Quarterly Insights series. Future growth is more likely to be driven by emerging applications for high-power LEDs, such as automotive headlights and general illumination, which are now becoming more viable as a new generation of devices deliver more luminous flux at lower prices.

However, much more work is needed for LED manufacturers to transform what remain emerging opportunities into mainstream commercial success. What that means in practice is a combination of factors: increased lumen output is the most obvious, but improved luminous efficacy is also crucial to minimize energy usage, reduce the need for costly thermal management systems, and increase the luminous flux from a single LED chip. Packaged LEDs must also offer effective thermal management and good optical design to deliver optimal performance.

By analysing the latest research results reported in the lab, as well as the technology advances revealed by major LED manufacturers, the report provides a unique insight into the future evolution of high-power LEDs. Specific focus areas include applications for high-power LEDs, advances in high-power LED chips, and packaging and optics, while the report also provides detailed profiles of the leading high-power LED manufacturers.

• The report on high-power LEDs is the first in a new series of LED Quarterly Insights reports, which are designed to provide regular, incisive analysis of the crucial technology innovations and commercial opportunities in the highly dynamic LED industry. Other reports in the current series will focus on organic LEDs; LED light engines; and cost reduction in LED manufacture. For more information, see the Technology Tracking website.
