Lumics' novel 5W laser chips, designed for the pumping of fiber lasers, are specified to operate at 60% efficiency and have achieved 80% in laboratory tests.
Lumics, Berlin, Germany, a manufacturer of pump laser modules and laser chips has introduced its next generation of fiber coupled laser modules. The uncooled LU0915T050 offers up to 5W output power at 915nm pump wavelength from a 105/125 µm diameter fiber.
The device is based on Lumics' new generation of chips that offer more than 60% electrical-to-optical power conversion efficiency. The company specializes in novel epitaxial techniques which have improved the efficiency to as much as 80% in some tests.
The uncooled module offers highest power from a fiber coupled single emitter in a popular standardized package. The footprint of the laser diode is compact, measuring 22x11 mm including a 2.7 mm screw hole for mounting it to a heat sink.
This high power single emitter module features an attractive price-performance ratio, Lumics says. Combining several modules allows easy scaling of the required pump power. Target applications include pumping ytterbium fiber laser and conventional diode-pumped solid state lasers (DPSS). The new generation of high power modules allows a cost effective laser system design with an enhanced performance.
The laser's operating current is specified at 5.5 A. The relatively low forward voltage is specified to have a maximum of 2.1 V. The associated numerical aperture multimode fiber is specified with NA= 0.22. The threshold current is typically 500 mA. The performance of the device is based on Lumics's proprietary chip technology. Key features are high reliability and improved laser facet passivation.
The complete module assembly is based on a fully automated active fiber alignment technology. Lumics's production is ISO 9001 certified with several screening steps throughout the chip manufacturing and module assembly process.
